General Questions
-
Projects for single-family homes in Loudoun County and Fairfax County typically range from $3,000 to $30,000. The budget depends on the number and type of fixtures needed, as well as the technology and materials selected—such as brass, stainless steel, aluminum, or integrated color-changing options. Costs also vary depending on how many of your home’s architectural and landscape features you’d like to highlight in your custom outdoor lighting design.
-
Timelines vary depending on the scope of your project. Smaller projects such as those with a dozen facade and path lights can be completed in a single day. Larger projects with dozens of fixtures also tend to entail the complexity of 2nd story fixture placement, moonlighting from trees or very long lighting runs and these may take several days. We will review the specifics during the design presentation.

Investing in outdoor lighting offers multiple benefits, including enhanced beautification, increased safety and security, and better use and enjoyment of your outdoor spaces. A lesser-known advantage is that outdoor lighting can make your indoor spaces feel larger by illuminating exterior areas like your backyard tree line, increasing the perceived field of vision from inside your home. This can create the feeling of a more expansive indoor environment.
-

Design & Installation
-
The installation process begins with a design consultation where we assess your home, outdoor spaces, and lighting goals. After finalizing the custom lighting plan, we schedule the installation. Smaller projects, such as a dozen façade and path lights, can often be completed in a single day. Larger projects, involving dozens of fixtures, second-story placements, moonlighting from trees, or long wiring runs, may take several days. During the design phase, we’ll provide a detailed timeline and keep you updated throughout the installation process.

No, professionally designed outdoor lighting systems should not intrude into your home’s interior. Our designers carefully position fixtures to showcase outdoor features without allowing light to penetrate inside. We use adjustable glare guards and consider viewing angles from both the street and inside the home. In rare cases, minor light intrusion can occur, but we minimize this through precise fixture placement.
-
We use only professional-grade outdoor lighting products, including solid brass, copper, and stainless steel fixtures from trusted brands like AMP, Hinkley, Garden Light, and FX Luminaire. Our low-voltage, LED systems are energy-efficient and designed to last. We also offer options for color-changing lighting, smart home integration, and fixtures that are Made in the USA.

In most cases, annual service contracts are unnecessary. High-quality outdoor lighting systems typically require minimal maintenance, such as pruning shrubs, cleaning fixture lenses, and adjusting fixture angles. We’re happy to teach you how to handle basic upkeep or provide service on an as-needed basis. Unlike other companies, we don’t lock clients into expensive subscription plans, which are often priced at 5–10% of the original system cost.
Types of Outdoor Lighting
-
Landscape lighting enhances the beauty, safety, and functionality of outdoor spaces, from gardens and walkways to trees and architectural features. It’s typically low-voltage, energy-efficient, and customized to your property’s design.
-
Architectural lighting highlights structural details of your home—like columns, facades, arches, or textures—to enhance curb appeal and emphasize craftsmanship at night.
-
Uplighting places fixtures on the ground, shining light upward to emphasize trees, columns, or architectural elements.
Downlighting (or moonlighting) positions fixtures above, casting soft, natural light downward to mimic the glow of moonlight. Both techniques can be used together for depth and dimension. -
Accent lighting draws attention to focal points like sculptures, trees, or textured walls.
Ambient lighting provides a soft overall glow for safety and atmosphere.
Task lighting is designed for specific functions, such as grilling or dining outdoors.
-
Bollard lights are short, decorative posts that illuminate driveways or walkways with a sculptural touch. Path lights are smaller fixtures used to light garden paths and flowerbeds for beauty and safety.
-
Hardscape lighting is built into permanent structures like patios, retaining walls, or outdoor kitchens. It enhances visibility and highlights texture while maintaining a clean, integrated look.
-
Moonlighting mimics natural moonlight by mounting fixtures high in trees or on structures, casting soft, dappled patterns through branches. It’s one of the most natural and elegant lighting techniques available.
-
Underwater lighting adds visual drama to fountains, ponds, or pools using sealed fixtures designed for full submersion. It’s perfect for creating a resort-like evening atmosphere.
-
Floodlights cast wide beams to illuminate large areas such as driveways or facades. Spotlights provide focused beams ideal for showcasing trees, sculptures, or architectural details.
-
Sconces are wall-mounted fixtures that provide soft ambient light near doors, garages, or patios. Pendant lights hang from above — such as under pergolas or porch ceilings — for task or accent lighting.
-
Solar lighting uses built-in panels to harness sunlight. While eco-friendly, performance can vary based on location and weather. For reliable results, we typically recommend low-voltage LED systems powered by transformers.
Technical & Performance Questions
-
Beam angle describes how wide light spreads from a fixture. Narrow angles (e.g., 12°–15°) highlight tall or narrow features like columns, while wider angles (e.g., 60°) illuminate broader surfaces such as small trees or walls.
-
CRI measures how accurately colors appear under a light source. A CRI of 80 or higher ensures your landscape looks natural and vibrant after dark.
-
Color temperature defines the warmth or coolness of light. 2700K–3000K offers a soft, inviting glow ideal for homes and landscapes, while 4000K+ produces a cooler, more modern white light.
-
Luminous efficacy is the ratio of light output (lumens) to energy consumption (watts). It measures the efficiency of a light source. Modern LEDs are far superior to halogen or incandescent bulbs.
-
The Ingress Protection (IP) rating tells you how resistant a fixture is to dust and moisture. For outdoor use, we recommend IP65 or higher, depending on placement and exposure.
-
Line voltage (120V or 240V) is standard household power. Low voltage (typically 12V) is safer and more energy-efficient, making it ideal for most landscape lighting systems.
-
Lumens measure brightness, while wattage measures energy use. With modern LEDs, you can achieve high brightness (lumens) at low wattage, maximizing efficiency.
-
Glare happens when a light source is too bright or poorly positioned, causing discomfort or reduced visibility. We use glare guards and precise aiming to eliminate it.
-
Low-voltage systems (12V) are safer, energy-efficient, and ideal for residential use. They rely on a transformer that converts standard 120V power to a lower, safer voltage for outdoor fixtures.
Control & Automation
-
Yes. We offer smart lighting controls with timers, dimmers, and app-based automation so you can manage your system from anywhere.
-
A photocell automatically turns lights on at dusk and off at dawn based on ambient light levels, providing effortless energy efficiency.
-
A timer automates when your lights turn on or off. A transformer converts standard 120V power into low-voltage (12V) current for landscape lighting systems, ensuring safety and energy savings.
-
RGB stands for Red, Green, Blue. These LEDs can mix colors to create dynamic, color-changing effects—controlled by a remote or mobile app for special occasions or mood lighting.
-
A motion sensor detects movement and activates lighting automatically, providing security and convenience around driveways, entryways, or pathways.
Warranty & Value
-
We provide a 3-year warranty on all materials and workmanship, including accidental damage. Our goal is to ensure long-term satisfaction and performance.
-
If a fixture fails within the warranty period, we’ll repair or replace it at no cost. For older systems, we offer service options and upgrades to modern LED technology.
