Featured Maintenance Project: Diagnosing a Failing Landscape Lighting System
One of our recent lighting maintenance projects involved troubleshooting a landscape lighting system that had suddenly gone dark across an entire section of the property. The system itself was only a few years old and had originally been installed using quality fixtures, transformer components, and thoughtful design practices.
However, during our diagnostic process, we discovered that changes made during a separate generator installation had unintentionally compromised the lighting system’s performance.
The landscape lighting transformer had been relocated to accommodate new electrical equipment, and multiple wire runs were improperly consolidated onto a single high-voltage tap. At the same time, portions of the low-voltage wiring had been buried too shallowly, leaving the system vulnerable to damage from landscaping activity, soil movement, and long-term wear.
These issues created voltage imbalance throughout the system, causing several fixtures near the transformer to fail prematurely while other areas experienced inconsistent performance.
Rather than simply replacing damaged fixtures, our team performed a full system diagnostic to identify the underlying causes of failure. From transformer configuration and voltage management to wire routing and load balancing, every aspect of the system needed to be evaluated to restore proper operation and protect the homeowner’s investment long-term.
Projects like this highlight why outdoor lighting maintenance often requires more than a basic repair. Low-voltage landscape lighting systems are carefully engineered electrical systems, and even small modifications can affect performance, fixture longevity, and nighttime appearance.
